Periodic Inspections

Periodic inspections aim to regularly verify the maintenance of the good working order as well as the safety and conditions of all the equipment from cars, heavy vehicles and their trailers.

The frequency of inspections for the various categories and types of vehicles are set out in Decree-Law No. 144/2012 of 11th July, which came into force on 10th August 2012 and regulates the periodic technical inspections, inspections for assignment registration and extraordinary inspections of motor vehicles and their trailers, provided for in section 116 of the Highway Code.

They can be made on the technical Class A inspection centers.

Required documents:

  • License Plates Certificate or Booklet + Ownership Registration Document;
  • Sheet of the last inspection.

Extraordinary Inspections

Extraordinary inspections are intended to identify or occasionally confirm the vehicle safety conditions as a result of changes in their manufacturing or functional features, by accident, or other causes, which compromise the safety of the vehicle.

They can be made in the technical inspection centers Class B.

Required documents:

  • License Plates Certificate or Booklet + Ownership Registration Document (if the documents are confiscated they can be replaced by validated replacement documents);
  • Sheet of the last inspection;
  • Specific documentation related to the present inspection (adaptation to different fuel, by accident, by transformation, or other reasons).

License Plates Inspection

Inspections for assigning new License Plates are intended to identify vehicles previously registered and verify their respective characteristics as well as confirming their working and safety conditions.

These inspections are carried out in the technical inspection centers Class B.

Required documents:

  • License Plates Certificate or Booklet + Ownership Registration Document;
  • Model Form 9 IMT.

Optional Inspections

Optional inspections are intended to verify the operating and safety conditions of all equipment and vehicle safety.

These inspections can be carried out in the technical inspection centers Class A and B.

Required documents:

  • License Plates Certificate or Booklet + Ownership Registration Document
